2016 Week 18 Recap: Team Building

April 25-May 1, 2016

We had our team building last April 29-30 at Terrazas de Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Batangas. I'm happy that my boss allowed us to just take Friday off, anyway, team building is still an office activity. We stayed at one of the private beach houses there.

What I liked about our accommodation:
  • Spacious for 24 pax
  • Super cold aircon in the bedroom. Hay, sarap lang magkulong sa kwarto lalo na if naiisip ko init sa Manila hahaha.
  • It has its own pool so if you don't want to stay at the beach kasi medyo may kalayuan, pwedeng tumambay dito lalo na sa gabi.
  • The food...super sarap! And more than enough. I was second batch in all 3 meals pero ang dami pa ring tira. And complete with juice/coffeee and desert! Grabe. Busog lusog hehehe. Ang sarap nung cheesecake baked by one of the staff. We ordered the night before for take home the next day. Unfortunately, walang nabake na cheesecake. Super sulit sana non kasi Php20/piece lang pero ang sarap talaga. At sa food talaga pinaka marami kong nasabi hahaha.
  • They have a terrace so syempre, automatic na don yung mga nagyoyosi hehe.
  • Their living room is spacious. Sarap tumambay don.
  • The house is surrounded by mountains so it's still a little cooler given that it's summer.
  • The staff were all attentive of our needs. They even prepared a spot for us at the beach for our activities.
  • With entertainment room and game room. Ang hindi ko lang masyadong gusto is that medyo malayo sa beach. Around 15 minutes walk daw papunta, pero pag pabalik, for sure mas matagal kasi puro paakyat yung road. Plus, it's steep. But it's not a problem if may sasakyan naman.
I haven't attended any team building in the past 5 years. Either I have other activities scheduled or ayaw ko lang hehehe. So I was pleasantly surprised when my presence was mentioned several times hahaha. And my boss really appreciates it daw. Hehe. Nagulat ako pero syempre secretly, natuwa rin ako.

It was pure fun and chill lang. No talks about work. We had one group dynamics and then the rest was free time. Some of us went swimming on Friday afternoon. I just stayed by the seashore and waited for sunset. I specifically requested that in case we still had group activities by the time it was sunset, we stop a while to watch it hehehe.Wala lang. Gustung-gusto ko lang talaga kasi manood ng sunrise at sunset. Nakakakalma ang ganda.

Swimming at the beach was only until 6 PM so we went back to the house after sunset and proceeded to the pool to keep cool while waiting for dinner. We had card games after dinner. May nagdala rin ng shot. May masipag nagtimpla ng punch. Two kinds of mixes - gin and juice and rum and juice. May tanggero na pagkabilis bilis magpa-ikot. Nagulat silang malamang umiinom daw ako at ang tibay ko raw hahaha. Well, I'm a social drinker. Di naman sugapa. At depende rin sa mood. At during that time, feel kong uminom. Plus, di naman ganon katapang so masarap.

May isa akong teammate sabi nya pangarap daw nya magmodel. Akala namin nagbibiro sya. Hindi daw. Pinagbigyan namin at instant photoshoot session sya. Nung una, tawanan pa kami. After a few minutes, kinarir na ng iba. May isa talagang binubuhat pa yung electric fan para lang may lipad hangin ang hair effect hehehe. Kaming 2 ng isa pang teammate ko, tawanan until matapos. Yun lang contribution namin hahahaha! It was all fun. Pero surrender na ako ng 2AM. The rest were still all wide awake. Not sure what time they all went to sleep. I allowed myself to just sleep longer. No pressure of going to the beach. Ayun, nagising kami 9AM na. Just enough time to have breakfast, wait for our turn in the shower and get ready for our trip back to Manila. Some still went to the beach for another dip. Ako, pass na. Nagkulong ako sa room dahil sa aircon. Ma-mimiss ko kasi sya.

Some wanted to pass by Tagaytay for lunch. Pero the one with car needed to go back to Manila for another event. Nakipagswap na lang ako since parang nasad yung isang batang teammate na di sya makakasama dahil sa car assignment hehehe. Anyway, Tagaytay is my home away from Baguio home kasi taga don hipag ko and I can just go there anytime. Plus, I wanted to go back to Manila earlier because I wanted to meet up with another friend.

And meet up with the friend I did. I just went home to leave my things and went straight to Megamall hehehe. Ang balak ko sana was manood ng Just the 3 of Us ni JLC and Jennylyn Mercado kaso nareschedule pala ang opening! We think it was because of Captain America kasi puro yun ang palabas hehehe.Anyway, we just roamed around for a while then transferred to Shang to have dinner at Rustan's. Don kami medyo tumambay para magkwentuhan.

On Sunday, I met up with another friend and went to our friend's dad's wake. Unfortunately, our friend just left when we arrived at the wake. Her mom said she went home to rest for a little bit. We stayed for around one hour to try and wait for her pero mukhang nakatulog na so hinayaan na lang namin. The mom entertained us. Hay. Nakakalungkot kasi pinatay sya :(. What a waste of life if it's not natural death. Rest in peace na lang po, tito.

Anyway, we went to Starbucks para magpagpag at para makapagkwentuhan na rin since matagal din kaming di nagkita hehehe. We called it a night by 9PM because both of us wanted to rest as early as we can.

Speaking of patay, may namatay din daw na kabarangay namin sa Baguio. Younger than me. Looks like he died in his sleep. At kakastalk ko sa FB, kakakasal lang nya last April :(. Hay. And for some reason, natatakot ako hahaha. As in di ko mapatay ilaw ko sa gabi. I planned to go home early last Friday because I was not able to buy tickets but I changed my mind. Ayaw ko kasing dumating sa amin ng gabi. Madadaanan ko kasi yung bahay nila pero malalagpasan naman ng taxi. Pero basta, ewan kung bakit. For sure nalibing naman na yun kasi bata pa per weired talaga. Maybe because it brings back memories to when we lost our parents. Anyway, may he rest in peace din.

P.S. Super late post na nito hehehe. Ngayon lang sinipag magtype.

2016 Week 14 Recap: Ad hoc project = Hectic

March 28 - April 2, 2016

And just like that, we're done with the 1st quarter of 2016. Whew!

Work

The ad hoc project where we need to fix systems ASAP made the team busy last week. The kind of busy that you need to extend hours most of the days to get things done. What a relief when Friday rolled in hahaha.

Anyway, most of the target deliverable for last week were completed. The ones left were not really critical but still needs to be checked nonetheless. We are moving on to the next step this week and next week, and that's the end user's testing. Crossing my fingers that there will be no issues. Otherwise, it means we did not test well hehe.

Oh, and finally, the vendor for another project showed up. Pero hay naku pa rin!

Living Quarters

So it's really bye Sky Cable for me since last week. My digibox was pulled out last Wednesday. The coming bill should be my last.

Weekend

We availed of a promo at Lee Hak Korean Restaurant at Pioneer Center, Kapitolyo, Pasig. Php 322 for a weekend lunch buffet, unlimitted iced tea included. To me, the food was ok for the price (but I'm not choosy in general). According to my friend who is more versed in anything Korean, their food was somewhat "Filipinized". While the selection may be few for some, it was enough for me as it's not overwhelming which ones to choose. They don't have much dessert options though. I guess there were just 2 fruits. But for that price, I think we got our money's worth.

We dropped by EDSA Shangri-la because my friend was interested to check out the wedding expo to get some ideas for her brother who sometimes does styling in weddings. While the prices were overwhelming, we enjoyed all the displays. We were especially amazed by the Ecuadorian roses displayed by one supplier. They had big, beautiful roses!

Beautiful Ecuadorian roses in different colors!

We were amazed by these roses in glass (or not sure if it's plastic) bubbles!

Golden Winterland, which I liked the most. Simple and clean. I'm sure your color motif will be highlighted if you have this setting in your reception. Ganda lang!
We also passed by a Starbucks event at the Shang mall so we spent a few minutes there. There were lectures about their different types of coffee and demo on their new coffee presses. We were treated to free coffee in different variety. It was good to know that the Kape Vinta coffee beans is from  the Philippines.
From the Starbucks website

From the Starbucks website
Random thoughts while we were in that event.
Me: I want to get rich through agriculture. Why can some people do it and we can't?
Friend: You need to have hectares of land so that you can produce enough to supply the big chains.
Me: nuninuninuni

But let's see about this dream. There has to be a way.

We went to Megamall less than an hour before closing time to check out the treadmills.

Sunday was spent doing some domestic chores and mass.

I hope you all had a great week. Cheers to another great week ahead.

Work Tales: Walang Kamatayang LKAS

I was looking for a specific guideline in my work email's Drafts folder when I saw this.

Hehehe. But it's true. This was the hardest component of the automation project we were and still currently working on. At the time I wrote that note, we were drafting the processes and requirements. Ang hirap talaga, pramis! Thankfully, after hours and hours and hours of round table discussions, we were able to arrive at the correct data and format to extract and pass.

The draft is dated 2/5/2014 so this was exactly 2 years ago hehehehe.

* LKAS  is the code we gave the text file that contains employee data that is extracted from one data source and loaded to another data source. *

Work Tales: Please Answer the Questionnaire

While searching for an email that I knew I sent 2 years ago, I came across another email from a colleague, asking me to answer a questionnaire for her niece’s school requirement.  Mid this year, I also learned that my friend from another team hired someone and mentioned that she is the niece of that colleague. I then asked my colleague if that niece who was in school before is the same niece who is now working for the same company as hours. He said yes. Small world. And happy for her because she was able to find a job that’s related to her course after college :).
And I just had to look for that questionnaire I answered 2 years ago because I honestly can’t remember what my answers were. Baka pala nagkalat ako non hahaha! Pero buti na lang hindi because I take these seriously…as in kinakarir ko ang pagsagot. Here’s the last question of that questionnaire and my answers (emphasis on the s haha!).

Question: As Information Technology students, what advice or tips can you give us in building a good and proper attitude towards becoming a Systems Analyst?
  • Analytical thinking is critical
  • You should have at least a basic understanding of the concepts of development. Know the difference between web and client apps. Which one is appropriate for what problem?
  • At the very least, you should know about databases.
  • You are between your client and the developers. Learn how to speak both languages. You will often find yourself explaining to clients how a system works. A hardcore programmer will always be technical when doing explanations making your client more confused. You as the analyst, should be able to translate technical jargon to simple English that your clients can understand.
  • Do not assume. Always ask the client. Validate and revalidate some more. Ensure that you are both in the same page.
  • You should be not afraid of dealing with people. If you want to become an analyst but you are too shy, work on your shyness. There will be a lot of people interaction.
  • Always know how and when to ask the right questions. There are several ways of getting requirements. Make Google your friend :).
  • Know when to be firm, when to meet halfway with the client or when to give them what they think they need. Be their devil’s advocate if you think they are not on the right track.
  • Always remember that whatever solutions you provide, it should always be aligned with the company objectives. At the end of the day, higher management will just care about its financials. They are willing to invest as long as they see a return on investment over the course. Hence, as the systems analyst who recommends solutions, your solutions should contribute to what’s important to management.
Now that I read it again, parang mali ata sagot ko kasi attitude ang tanong nila pero skills ang mga sinabi ko hahahaha! Huwell, anyway, ayan, graduate naman na so keri na rin siguro hahaha. Koloka!

Update: According to that niece, she got a high grade on that project. Good to know haha!

Work Tales: Zero-Defect UAT

I got news tonight that our internal client was happy with the outcome of the system that we implemented recently. And I was a little surprised to hear that from her knowing that it's not really her nature to give such kinds of feedback. Specifically, she and her were team happy and surprised that there were no findings during their user acceptance testing.

I'm happy to learn that the team's hard work paid off, especially so that it was not a bed of roses during the journey. We were not able to meet the original timeline that we committed to our clients due to multiple projects being handled by the same resources, hence causing some delays in the completion of tasks prior their testing. I have underestimated the timeline for my own testing. It took me longer than my estimate. My findings were showstoppers so I had to wait for the Dev team to resolve the issues.

The moment I was not provided with the test site on the day that I should start my testing, I knew there was a chance we can't make it to the deadline. When I was finally able to do a quick test of the basic functionalities of the system and got major findings, I knew we really will be delayed. I toyed with the idea of just handing over a buggy system to them just so we won't be tagged as delayed. However, my other self, who have always believed that we can have a bug-free system by doing thorough testing, was against my initial idea. My other self won. And so I talked to the client's team member working with us, told her that we were not going to make it to the original timeline, presented a new timeline based on where we were at that time and silently prayed that she would just accept the fact that we were delayed and agree to the new timeline. She was ok with it. One down. Composed another email to be sent to the project owner, project manager, and my boss, again with a silent prayer that they won't have any violent reactions. I must be lucky that day because I did not recieve any replies from them haha.

So off we went with the client's testing, and while they were doing theirs, I still continued with my own because while I was more confident with the finished product that we handed over for their testing, I still wanted to make sure that I did not miss anything. Good thing that I did beacuase I had one more finding and it happened prior them testing that specific module. Otherwise, we wouldn't have zero defect haha.

We were delayed for 4 days and a delay is still a delay no matter how short or long it is. So you see, I really can't help but be surprisd with the news. But thank you anyway.

On the other hand, I'm happy to have made that decision to accept the delay even if at the time, I did not feel good about it at all and has caused me too much stress. With this experience, I learned that it's better to just face the music head on and just be transparent about things. However, as a note to myself, delays should only be because of valid and acceptable reasons. This way, everybody happy. :). Cheers!

Someone is Doing Something Nasty

I got so frustrated (yet again) yesterday because of two things at work. A lot of email exchanges going around for an issue we encountered since Monday, with me just having to wait because it's something that our team does not have control over. In one of the emails, I saw this:

When I read it at first, I thought the sender sent it to the wrong recipients because the message sounded like that of hacked sites hehe. But then, checking it again, it was an email meant for us. Well, at least now I know that even the servers we use have those type of messages. I wonder if those could be changed to something like "Caught in the act! Stop right now! I have captured your profile and currently sending it to your HR department!". Hehe

Of Power and Honesty and Integrity

It's never too easy to be the bearer of bad news. However, it had to be done and it had to be that way. And it's true--with great power comes great responsibility. We should always know how to use it with honesty and integrity. Otherwise, we should be ready with the consequences because it's also true that karma is a b*tch. Enough said.

PMI Technical Session: Elevate your Executive Pitch

At a time when I was trying to digest and decipher deeper executives’ minds and expectations, this invite landed in my mailbox. Just in time LOL. Without fully understanding what it was all about, I forwarded the email for her approval. Luckily, I got the support from her and her boss on the same day I requested for approval, so I didn’t waste time in signing up the whole team before they change their minds hehe.

Some details from the site:
Date: March 19, 2013
Time: 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM (dinner included)
Where: Clermont Function Room (to be confirmed), Discovery Suites, Ortigas Center, Pasig City
Cost: P500.00 for PMI Philippines chapter members and P1,200.00 for non-members or whose membership has expired

About the Topic:
Elevate your Executive Pitch!
As project managers, chances are there will be times when you need to communicate with a senior executive about some aspect of your work. Media can vary and it could be a presentation to a group of leaders or a one-on-one meeting. In these types of situations, how do you get executives to listen to you? To improve your chance of success, you need to: have a good understanding of what's different about communicating with executives and equally as important is to adapt your communications to take those differences into account.

This session will discuss the following topics:
  1. What is Executive Communications all about
  2. Understand what's different about communicating with executives
  3. Leading off with an Executive
  4. Relationship to Benefits/Priorities the executive cares about
  5. Agenda: Why, Who, What, How, Execute
  6. Adding Value to Very Important Top Officer VITO's day
  7. Managing Other Players in the Drama
  8. Content fit with "Why for Who"

I have attended a session last year, also sponsored by PMI and I find it interesting and helpful. I hope I will learn a lot from this session as well.

Until then, I'm off to hibernate in the islands for the rest of the week :).

Two to Three Slides Only Please

Last week, we were asked by one of the directors to prepare options on how to move forward with our current project given some assumptions. The team provided an Excel file format, complete with all the details and important notes and all. After that, we had to meet with the director for review. It was ok, except that, his next requirement was for us to prepare an executive summary that will be presented to the executives (in our organization, these are the people directly reporting to the CEO). Not a jargon to me since I’ve heard it before from my boss and I even helped her prepare one (in Word doc format, around 10-15 pages). But the director’s different so I had to make sure and so I asked what his idea is of an executive summary. His answer? A presentation deck with 2-3 slides that contains all the essentials. Ok, in short, we need to summarize the contents of our Excel file in 2-3 Powerpoint presentation slides. Whew. So ok, we tried and so the gist went to the first 3 slides. The added slides are short explanations of the 3 main slides. Hooray to us! Hehe.

It was a challenging activity but this somehow gave me a glimpse of how it is to work with executives. They are not into the nitty-gritty details most of the time. In one glance (in this case, 1 slide of our presentation deck), they should be able to understand what we want to tell them.  And since all your ideas are in just a few slides, make sure you know the nitty-gritty details by heart so as not to faint during presentation LOL.

My next question…boss, who’s presenting? :D We’ll know that by next week perhaps.

Happy 9th!

Time flies...super. I've now officially started my 9th year with my current company. Thank you Father God for the gift of a job that keeps me going. Thank you for all the lessons learned, people met and self-discoveries in my stint in the corporate world. Hoping for a more fulfilling, more adventurous, and more challenging ride until the 10th. Cheers!

Workplace Quotable Quotes I

Got these during a conference call with some DBAs in the different regions.

"Woefully underpowered" – describing a server that has low specifications
"Database names are usually named based on clients unless the DBA stupidly named it."

I just find it funny but true! :)

If looks could kill...

I was sorting my work files last night when I saw this text document. Create date says June 18, 2009.

I think this was the time I had to do an ad hoc report needed by a client and that has to be delivered that same night.

Hanove

Sakit ng ulo ko to the highest level.

But seriously, I don't anymore know how to handle it. In my personal opinion, their conflict is not just because of work. It is already something on a personal level which no one but them can resolve. That they are just using work issues to get back at each other. I don't even know the right things to say because I don't understand where it's all coming from. To me, it takes two to tanggo so I'm taking both of them accountable for tonight's episode. I hope they will be able to settle things SOON!

And can I say this again. Ang sakit ng ulo ko ng bonggang-bongga. Grr!

While Waiting

While waiting for the implementer....

A drive from Corporate to consolidate all SQL Servers led the team to transfer databases to other servers. Since this was not included in our 2010 portfolio and since our SSEs are loaded with their own projects, I took the responsibility of handling this project. Can I just say that I missed that stuff? Hehehe. But I'm glad to learn that I'm still the way I was before when it comes to project overseeing. :)

Ok, he's already here. Off to implement...

On Hold

The project that we’ve been working on for more than a year now was put on hold due to the probable changes for the company by the end of this year (which by the way excited us when we first learned about it :)). This is the very project which caused too much stress to the team members. Stress level was high that it drove some people to submit resignations. And almost everything and anything related to it was oh so full of drama.

You see, prior to the announcement which we did last Friday (just a day after confirming the changes from the business owners), the management team met to discuss what will be the possible impact of the changes. We have anticipated negative reactions which will be normal given all that went through with this project. But we were also hoping for open-mindedness from the team as this is something that we never saw happening. But during this time, I did not get any reactions from my team. I thought perhaps they are still in the process of internalizing what was just announced or maybe they are too shy to ask the director directly. Yes, we asked for his help for this as well hehehe.

So last Tuesday, I met with my project team to really know how they are feeling about the changes. And I was in for a lot of surprises more than what I expected.

Here are some of the feedbacks:
  • It’s sad because I feel that our efforts are just wasted but the director is right that we gained a lot of knowledge during the duration of the project, not only in terms of our skills but also on handling situations involving the project. I just want to know what’s next for us.
  • I feel bad about it because of all the efforts already exerted will be wasted but more than that, I feel relieved.
  • I actually did not feel anything. My concern now is what we are going to do now that the project is on hold.
I was blown hehehe. I did expect about them being sad and all but to hear them that what’s concerning them more actually are their next assignments really PLEASANTLY surprised me :). I felt their maturity about the whole thing and they are more on the positive side! Note that these same people have been part of the rollercoaster ride for this project so to hear them say those things was happiness for me.

I am one proud and grateful boss :D.

Longest

I had the longest employee evaluation last night. It lasted for almost 6 hours. It was a very tiring and draining experience. But I’d like to give myself a pat in the back because I was able to easily switch roles during that time – from being the strict manager to someone who is empathizing with him to an outsider observing the exchange between the officer and the employee and trying to comprehend everything and quickly thinking on how to handle it. The greatest thing though was that, I kept my cool…and that’s an accomplishment in itself because I’m not known to be very patient when it comes to discussions that go around circles. :p

But then again, I’m not yet done with that. There’s today to tackle still, which I don’t have any idea until this moment how I’m going to hanle it. Perhaps, it will all dawn on me, after I have my hearty lunch. :D

And in the middle of the interesting discussions last night, I learned that I have to attend a meeting at 10AM today. Good luck. Right at this moment, I feel lightheaded due to lack of sleep. I may be a Dory for most of the day hihihi.

Blabbering

I’m supposed to go home tonight but Mama texted a few minutes ago telling me to just cancel my trip because of the bad weather. Not safe to travel.

*****
Deployment of the project was cancelled and for the past weeks, we revisited the requirements and now doing some changes. Sigh. Now, I’m just looking forward to the time when we can finally deploy it.

*****
Coron trip is in less than two weeks. We’ve impulsively changed our trip schedule two nights ago to accommodate our preferred IT. We’ll be traveling with another group and their proposed IT lacks some places that we want to visit, thus we added some stuff for our group. It was a blessing in disguise that Cebu Pacific changed their flight schedule (they moved it to 40 minutes later) so that when we inquired about changing our schedule, they did it without any additional charges. Weee! Our changes? We’re traveling on the 18th – first flight instead of the 19th and we’re leaving Coron on the 22nd – last flight :D. Err…hello kaitiman hihihi.

My dilemma right now is the things I need to bring. I haven’t been to places this year so I’m not used to packing things again wehehe. Although I promised myself to pack earlier and not the night before, we’ll see about that this weekend.

*****
How I wish I have even a little of creativity in me. Hay. In colors alone, there are so many to choose from. So which goes with which? Amp. And when doing selections, why do we have to be presented with many options? Can’t we just have black or white, A or B, 1 or 2, true or false? But then again, where’s the fun in that? Hehehe.

*****
Ok. Enough blabber. See you when I see you.

Friday Stories

One of the things that pisses me off the most are the taxi drivers who don’t know the fastest and trafficless way to get to my destination. And they still have the nerve to ask me what route to take. Since that’s their profession, aren’t they supposed to know it in order to provide the best customer service? :p

On to happier things. :)

It’s Friday already! Yey! Looking forward to mall visit after a whole day meeting with the client. Uber excited to be off from work :D even though I forsee work this weekend :p.

Meeting with client so far is relaxed and less stressful. No raised voices, no competing with talk time, no cutting while you’re talking hehehe. I wish it would be this way as often as possible.

Looking forward to a run this Sunday but to be able to do that, I should be in UP tomorrow morning for the registration. So it’s up to me still wahaha.

Still an addict with FB’s My Farm…I’m one hapy farmer :D. Can’t wait to harvest tonight hehehe.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

The Big Night

No, it’s not about PBB. It’s just that Friday night was a big night for the triumvirate of the team. It was just supposed to be just a sumptuous dinner and chilling with the team but apparently, it was not. I don’t want to elaborate further. Suffice to say that the event sucked all of our energy and left us with negative and ill feelings after. As a result, I temporarily disconnected myself from the rest of the world this weekend – personal and office phones remain untouched and away from me, on silent mode, except when I had to text a colleague and a friend, minimal internet, no meet ups with friends. I just had a quick visit to the mall and for the rest of the weekend, I was a bum at home.

But much as I’d like to be on hiatus a little longer, I can’t. Anyway, I have a few more hours. I’ll reconnect full time later.

Now, I’m wondering what happens this morning. But still, I’m hoping for the best, and for world peace hehehe.

On a positive note, once again, I’ve proven that our director is supportive of us :).

Just tired

This is not a rant. Just plain tired. Been working long hours this week and it’s taken its toll on me this early, on Thursday hehehe. Usually I do last until the weekend but not this week wahahaha. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll bounce back tomorrow…even if it’s already Friday hehehe.

Oh there’s the good news. HR has already confirmed the correctness of the MYC data. Now we can update the records, validate that it reflects in the systems, wait for HR’s confirmation again, and FINALLY unlock the database. Weee! A few more minutes and I’m off for some chillin’. :p
