Nuninuninu

I’m a little pissed off with a colleague right now. But my team is more pissed off I suppose. We’ve been trying to call him since 12:00 AM but he was not answering our calls. After 2 hours of trying to no avail, I called his boss :p. Matagal pa yang lagay na yan bago ako mag-escalate ha. I just asked him to help us contact the guy. After a few minutes, the boss sent an SMS that he too could not contact him and just asked for the details of our request. No, I did not tell the boss that his subordinate missed a step in the redeployment that’s why we were having problems with the generation. I was not yet pissed off at that time.

While waiting for the boss to send us an update, we continued to contact the guy. After 10 years, he finally answered but unfortunately, he was not his calm self (according to the team, he has been like that all throughout our deployment). At first I let the team deal with him but he was really irritated based on his tone. Just a few minutes into the call, I heard raised voices so I just took over. Of course he did not calm down so I just used my most serious, medyo mataray voice to deal with him. I was trying very hard to just focus on what needs to be done and not point out mistakes but he asked what happened so I told him frankly what he missed when we asked him to redeploy earlier and that we were able to correct it through another person’s help. We only got stuck because the other guy doesn’t know the password for the login credential that was used. It’s not my nature to point out things but he asked for it so that’s what he gets . I’m not sure too if he was reprimanded by his boss hihi.

I do understand that we have been doing the deployment since Friday afternoon but then again, there’s work to be done, and the generation is scheduled on a Saturday and therefore he is expected to be there since he’s part of it.

Lesson learned: escalate right away.

Get even? Nah! He will have more of this come Q2 bwahahaha.

Anything Under the Sun

Anything goes. Just randomly listing.
  • PMP time. We were given the option whether to use the tool or the Excel template. I opted to use the tool. So far, I did not have any problems on latency. Maybe because only a few are using it and majority is using the Excel template hehehe. I'm done with 2, 7 more to go.
  • My own PMP is long overdue. Sayang ang January increase huhu.
  • First time to do goal setting for the team. What's a goal setting template?! This is so alien to me.
  • TAMS Upgrade Phase 1 deployment. Bakit ba napakailap mo sa amin? Hanggang deployment, pinapahirapan mo kami. Sana naman sa generation, hindi na.
  • Have been working since Jan. 1. Up to this day, only 2 work-free days so far.
  • My brother is leaving again on the 29th. Paano na ang project? Hmmm.
  • I need IDs (e.g. TIN, SSS, NBI). What's the easiest to get?
  • So sleepy. Already headbanging. I'll be very careful not to hit my laptop hehe.
  • Call time later - 1 PM...but we're still here.
  • Lie low muna sa Outdoor. Schedule conflict.
  • New term. Che che - meaning kain. Not sure where it originated. I just learned that from Outdoor friends hehe.
  • Pack up, go home, hit the bed. Be back later.

Signing-off

***

Hi All,

This is to confirm that we have finally finished the PT2 Testing. We are now signing-off. Deployment will be this afternoon.

Thanks,

***

This was the very first email I read when I got to work today and it made me teary-eyed. The loooooonnnnggg wait for the deployment is over. Whew! We have been working on this project since July last year and it was a very challenging journey. I’m glad that we’re near its completion. There’s still the post implementation test and the stabilization phase but that should be a breeze already.

To She, Ardee and Anthony:

Thank you so very much for all the hard work, dedication and endless patience you all showed while working on this project. I’m glad that you’ve all been there all throughout this journey. I know it was a tough one but I really really really appreciate everything – from the holiday works to the no break workdays to the countless almost sleepless nights.

We’ve done it now, we’ll do it again for ADP Integration! 1 down, 2 to go!

Coaching and Mentoring

Here are some items discussed during our PMP (Performance Management Program) workshop last December 2008.

Coaching versus Mentoring:

Mentoring - provide help/guidance/advice which is usually based on the mentor’s experiences

Coaching
  • It’s more of getting the person being coached to think
  • Guiding the person towards self-realization
*** Coaching is more effective than mentoring. ***

To be a good coach:
  1. Be an active listener
  2. Use powerful/laser-like questions. By doing so, the coach can help the coachee realize things that will help him/her address issues.
  3. Using proper language. This includes words, body language and tone.
  4. Using coachee’s language. A good coach should be able to turn the coachee’s language into a question that will be thrown back to the coachee.

During a coaching session:

  • The coachee should talk more.
  • Avoid finishing of sentences.
  • Avoid giving advice because it may become subjective.

2009 Goals

9 in '09:

  1. Bring back the Wonderwoman in me. I have to admit I slacked off at times in 2008. The consequences? A not so perfect project. I know I can handle multiple things that come up all at the same time. Been there, done that and with still excellent results. I can switch from one concern to another and even entertain other items in between without loosing focus. So ADP, Portfolio, and other work concerns, watch out. :p
  2. Manage my life. As per John Maxwell, there’s no such thing as time management. There’s only management of one’s life. I mainly want to have a balanced life in terms of work, family and outdoor and friends for 2009. Time may not be equally distributed among these but at least all three should be covered.
  3. Spend more on project.
  4. Improve management skills – attend seminars, read books, apply learning. Practice is the key.
  5. Whenever I can, I’ll coach rather than mentor. Coaching is more effective.
  6. Delegate appropriately. It’s one way of empowering people.
  7. Travel, travel, travel.
  8. Be less grumpy wahahaha
  9. Bring back my 4th year College waistline :p. Umm, but wait, we’ll see about that hahaha. It’s just that one of my close friends is getting married hopefully this year and according to her, I’ll be one of the secondary sponsors and I think this is a good excuse to go on a diet wahahaha.

Affirmation:

I am optimistic for 2009. I shall kick ass this year. Watch me. Hear me roar. I’ll make it a point to enjoy every step of the journey and focus only on positive things. To my detractors (if there will be any), sorry to disappoint you but I won’t be bothered hehe.

Thank You 2008

My 2008 has been eventful mostly on the positive side. Some highlights:
  • Outdoor Club (focus this year is on mountaineering)
    - After 3 years of being absent in the world of mountaineering, I was again able to conquer several mountains, including Mt. Pulag. Unfortunately, I was not able to join in the Mt. Apo climb because I got sick. :(
    - Was able to meet new friends
    - Was able to meet and be trained by some people from the Everest team.
  • Another movement in my career which made me even busier by Q4. This had some lowlights but it’s not worth dwelling on it.
  • Had to move out of Bangkal apartment. Transferred to QC. Soloist this time. No more housemates. I’m loving it.
  • Started with a project. Excited for its completion. Target is this year. Good luck to me hahaha.
  • Had a crush on someone then another one wahahaha.
  • Spent several days in the hospital. Iww. As far as I can remember, this is my first time to be confined. All other rare hospital visits were up to ER only. Not sure though when I was a baby.

Thank you, Father, for a very fruitful 2008. I am forever grateful.
